Reader Profile
From my research I discovered that the target audience that my magazine was going to be aimed at was the 16-18 years old. The majority of my researches (67%) were women however I aim to target both men and women, I realised that my audience was young, outgoing, sociable people. When asked about their preferred genre the most common was R&B also the results for the four most favourable bands/artists were all R&B for example Usher, Trey Songz, Keri Hilson and Chris Brown. This led me to the conclusion of picking R&B as my genre as it was the most popular in my targeted audience. I included a question about where they bought their garments; this was so that I could get a general idea of how much they spent. I also added a question which asked them about how much they spent on their current magazine this would helping me to come up with a realistic price for my magazine. From this I learnt that my audience could afford £2-2.75 due to the fact that they only were student and unemployed.
Analysis of an Image
This picture of Katy Perry shows her in a garden, the posture that she is standing in makes the audience feel as if she is looking down on us. This is a low angle shot of her which makes the audience feel inferior. This picture gives her the role of a teenage girl as in her hand we are able to see that she is holding a lollipop which may suggesting that she is a young, also behind there is a paddling pool that only a child would play in. The costume that she is dressed in is very bright and the colours are pink and blue which is stereotypically preferred by teenager or children. The background and her surroundings suggest that it is a summers day for example the bright flowers, the sky looks very cloudy which also may be a reference to her innocence that a young girl has. She also looks like she is hiding something behind herself the denotation of this could be that young children are always in situations (hiding something from their parents). The background looks as if this house is at the end of a cliff which again gives them high status. The red flowers could be a symbol of her being in love, what teenage girls do.
Analysis of Double Page Spread- Vibe
This R&B contents page has one main focused image that has been added to grab the audience’s attention; this is the only picture that is in colour and is the largest one amongst all of the other pictures. Red is the colour of her dress which represents her passion toward music, it gives her more power also the way in she is positioned makes her look more supreme as this picture is a full angel shot and it is eye level with creates a relationship between the readership and the artist. This double page spread contains a lot of writing as it includes an interview this has influenced me to base an interview on my double page spread because most R&B magazines do so. The other small images that have been included on this double page spread are in black and white, this was done to help the may image appeal more to the audience. The small images show different postures this was done to signify dance moves linking back to a music magazine. The text colour of the subheading is black and bold apart from the artist name this tells the audience who it is about and what their main focus is. The colours that have been used are very simple and this tells me that both men and women can read this magazine. Overall this double page spread is able to represent and appeal its genre through its images, text, and colours used.
Analysis of Double Page Spread- Kerrang
This double page spread easily portrays its genre through a number for factors for example the colours that have been used are red, black and white are all associated with the genre. A very popular band “My Chemical Romance” has been interviewed on this contents page this was to attract to its target audience. The main image shows a man holding a microphone this represents music to be the key focus of the contents page, it also looks like he is leaning on the microphone which is helping him stand this suggests that music is the only thing keeping him alive. There are also 3 other images included two of them show the band with musical instruments this signifies the importance of music. This double page spread has less text to the R&B one this may be due to the fact that its target audience prefers this and would rather enjoy the having a lot of pictures rather than text. In comparison to the other R&B double page spread this one it much more bright and stands out whereas the R&B one was plain and simple the reason for this may be that metal/rock music is generally loud and differentiates itself from other music genres. The double page spread grabs its reader’s attention by implying that the magazine is “WORLD EXCLUSIVE” which is in bold and stands out from its red background. Overall this contents page stereotypical shows what it genre looks like and what they are interested in.
Analysis of Double Page Spread- NME
This double page spread this from an indie magazine NME. The title of the contents is “The Teenagers” referring to the band which is clearly represented in the picture as it shows three young white males. No females are included in the image and the boys look as if they feel very conformable and laid back with both their music and each other. This image could also be a refers to their sexuality however behind the boys are posters of girls that are in very much revealing clothes telling us what their interests are and referring to how a teenagers room would look like. The colours that have been used are bright, bold and appeal to the audience as they are likely to be preferred by “teenagers”. This double page spread has little text compared to the R&B contents page, it tells its readers what they “need to know” by adding a small paragraph on the bottom left had corner the reason for this might be that if the reader didn’t want to particularly read the whole contents page it is able find out what’s going just by reading the little paragraph with all the key points. The colour for the box is blue and the text colour is black and white this was done so the readers are quickly able to identify it and read it. Another section has also been included titled “Everyone’s talking about...” the effect of this immediately results to grab the reader’s attention because they would be interest in what is currently going on. The section has been organised into a neat order as subheadings, pictures and text are all provided. The text and subheadings are bold making it easier for the target audience to read and also images are provided.
NME- Contents Page
This is an example of an indie contents page (NME). Unlike the other two contents pages this title had been included on the top of the page in the middle, it suggests that it is a weekly magazine and the date has also been added underneath this. The only bit of the title that is in red is the “NME” this shows that it has a great position and is able to aware the readership for the name of the magazine. Only one image has been used which has been added in the centre of the page this highlights the importance of the picture and forces the reader’s attention on to it. The image is of what the reader looks like stereotypically, the contents of this magazine has been included on the right and subheadings have also been added so that the audience is able to find specific areas that it may need. The picture includes a band that this genre would generally be inspired by. This contents pages has displayed an advert on the bottom page which none of the other magazines have done this might be because that genre is able to afford that type of service that has been shown. This influenced me to add an advert on to my own contents page.

Kerrang- Contents page
This contents page is very different in comparison to the R&B one and it is able to suit its intended audience. A variety of images have been used in this contents page whereas only one image has been used in the R&B contents page this allows the audience to relate themselves with these artists. The largest image that has been used is a man who has a tattoo on his neck, and five other images that relatively the same size has been used of different artists and different bands informing the audience what the magazine is about and who it is about which would interest them. The colours that been used for this magazine are white, black and yellow. The title for this content page stands out from its background and has been placed on the on the top right corner it is noticeable. There is much more text on this contents page compared to the R&B one for example on the top left there is a small article this may be because the writer wants to educate its reader.
R&B Contents page Analysis
The selection of my contents page was from an R&B magazine “Vibe”. The image that has been used for this magazine is very power as both women look very confident and represent the genre for this magazine. They are both dressed in revealing dresses this represents their sexuality the colours of their dresses are army colours which also relates to how superior they are, that they are able to dress in masculine colours. Furthermore this content page has very little space for text as the picture plays a major role to attract the targeted audience. The text that has been used has been is very small although it has been designed in a well-ordered structure; the pages are referred to as “departments” this is shows that all pages are all linked which would enable the reader to read them. The title of the contents page “contents” also takes up little space, and is included on the top left had corner which is the theme of “Vibe” allowing them to differentiate themselves from current other magazines. The background colour that has been used is white this makes the black font easier to read and also helps it to stand out. Overall the magazine has an effect on its intended audience by various aspects such as the image, text, colour and background.
